Layoffs at Belvidere

by David Zatz on
Belvidere's Millionth

he leadership team at Chrysler’s Belvidere Assembly Plant celebrates the production of a Jeep Patriot, the one-millionth compact vehicle currently being produced at the plant on July 28th, 2010. Chrysler also manufactures the Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass at this plant. The one-millionth vehicle is to be delivered to a customer in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

The Belvidere, Illinois plant that produces the Dodge Dart, Jeep Compass, and Jeep Patriot is laying off 325 employees, but will remain on three shifts, according to the Rockford Register Star.

While Chrysler sales went up by 11% overall, Dart sales plunged in February; the car has not struck a chord with buyers yet, and faces stiff competition from the heavily discounted Dodge Avenger and Chrysler 200 within the same showrooms.

Buyers looking at well-equipped Darts have been faced with heavily-discounted, larger, V6-optional Avengers and 200s since the car first launched; some 2014 Darts come with more equipment and lower pricing. Natural Dart sales levels may not become clear until after current stocks of Avengers and 200s are sold out.
