Where it’s made

Chrysler has moved around some of its engine production and has built up its facilities in recent years, leading to some confusion as to what is made where. That’s beyond the Fiat-led “in-sourcing” of components, from cams to engine blocks, that used to be made by vendors — in some cases, in Mexico or China — and are now made in the “100 miles of Michigan” region.  Every engine plant is in Michigan except one.

  • Trenton North — the “old” plant that was to be shut down — is making the 2.4 liter “Tiger Shark” four cylinder, the 3.0 and 3.2 liter Pentastar V6, and some 3.6 liter V6 engines.
  • Trenton South — the “new” plant which is adjacent to Trenton North — is making the 3.6 liter V6.
  • Mack Avenue — a historic Chrysler plant once slated for permanent closure — is still being set up to make V6 engines.
  • Dundee — the “GEMA” plant created to make four-cylinders — is making the 2.0 and 2.4 liter engines, in both TigerShark and original form. The TigerShark version is used by Jeep Renegade, Chrysler 200, and Dodge Dart; the original, by Compass, Patriot, and Journey.  Dundee also makes the Fiat 1.4 and 1.4 Turbo for North American production only; the 1.4 Turbo will also be exported to Italy for use in Renegades shipped to North America.
  • Saltillo North — this Mexican plant makes all Chrysler V8 engines, along with some 2.4 liter TigerShark engines (starting earlier in 2014).

Transmissions are made in Indiana, in the Kokomo region, southeast of Chicago, over 200 miles from Detroit and around 180 miles from the nearest Chrysler assembly plant (Toledo).
