Mopar sets Aussie drag record

by David Zatz on

NRHA Mopar Avenger

Mopar drivers set new Pro Stock records at Australia’s Willowbank Raceway, with Lee Bektash jumping to the top with a qualifying quarter-mile run of 6.964 seconds at 196.67 mph. Mr. Bektash later broke his own national Pro Stock record by winning the first round over Ian Brown, with a time of 6.960 seconds. In both cases, he was driving a “Dodge Avenger” drag car; the new Dart bodies have not yet reached Australia.

According to reader “con383,” who supplied this story, the car was originally run by American NHRA champion Allen Johnson; the engine is a Mopar R4 LA-based small block with Hemi heads similar to current NHRA heads. Power output is reported to be 1,100 horsepower at 10,000 rpm. The body is carbon fiber.  Discussion.
