Chrysler’s little ignition key recall

by David Zatz on

Chrysler is voluntarily recalling around 350,000 model-year 2008 vehicles because the ignition keys may get stuck or move unexpectedly. The problem affects vehicles made before May 12, 2008. The key may not fully return to ON after the vehicle is started, causing defroster and wiper functions to be lost — but not the loss of airbags.

In rare cases, it may move past ON to ACC or OFF, which would result in stalling, loss of power steering and braking, and loss of airbags and other safety features.

Chrysler said it was aware of “a single minor accident that was possibly related to either condition” with no injuries or deaths. the problem affects the Dodge Charger and Magnum, Chrysler 300, and Jeep Commander and Grand Cherokee, all within the 2008 model year.

As with all recalls, replacements will be done at no cost to the customer. In the meantime, owners of affected cars should remove their ignition keys from their keyrings to cut weight, and make sure that when the car or Jeep is started, the key returns to the ON (RUN) position. Those with questions may call Chrysler Group’s Customer Information Center at 1-800-853-1403 or visit the company’s web sites, which can provide information on recalls performed and yet to be done.
