Ferrari, Maserati return to India

by David Zatz on

Ferrari and Maserati will return to India, according to IndianAutosBlog. Maserati is setting up an eight-person team to run a national sales company and select dealerships, aiming to start sales in the second half of 2015; Ferrari will run thing sfrom Dubai, and reportedly has selected two existing luxury car dealers (Navnit and Yadur Kapur, in Mumbai and New Delhi).

According to the publication, high-priced cars in India have been hit by high import taxes, with the segment as a whole expected to reach just 110-115 cars and SUVs. They do expect the Maserati Ghibli diesel to sell relatively well.

Indians once purchased large numbers of locally built Willys,  Chrysler/Plymouth, and Fiat cars, but a switch to smaller cars doomed Chrysler-related designs; Willys designs morphed into Mahindra’s current lineup, based on the same ancestors but rather different from American Jeeps; and Fiat lost popularity rapidly when imports were liberalized.

FCA has announced that it will spin off Ferrari to raise money, but will retain a controlling interest in the company.
