2 Million Chrysler brand sales in NAFTA region

by Bill Cawthon on

FCA-NAFTA-Web
With detailed figures for  the U.S., Canada, and Mexico in hand, it’s time to look at total North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) region sales.

Full-year sales of the four Chrysler brands, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, totaled 2,388,467 cars and trucks. Adding in the Alfa Romeo and Fiat brands brought the grand total to 2,447,235 units.

For the U.S., North America, and the world, Jeep was the top selling brand, followed by Dodge. The Ram pickup was the top-selling model in North America.

While the Grand Cherokee was the favorite Jeep model in the U.S. and Mexico, Canada preferred the Cherokee to such an extent it was the best-selling Jeep model in the region.

Canada also tilted the totals for the Dodge Grand Caravan, which isn’t even sold in Mexico.  With the Grand Caravan outselling the Town & Country by more than 6 to 1 in December and nearly the same margin for the whole year, one wonders about the wisdom of dumping the Dodge in favor of the Chrysler, at least in Canada.

The 200 did well across the board once it became available, and 2015 should prove to be a very good year for the newest Chrysler. It was No. 13 among all cars in the U.S. market in December and though the latest by-model figures for the Canadian market are from November, it looks good there, too. In November, the 200 outsold every American-badged car, except for the Ford Focus and Chevy Cruze, in Canada.

Chrysler barely missed being the top automaker in Canada for the year. Ford had a slightly bigger sales surge in December, taking the month by 1,102 sales and the year by 1,819 sales, a difference of 0.6%. Chrysler finished 13.9% ahead of third-place General Motors.

The NAFTA nations accounted for 88.4% of worldwide Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram sales. Jeep had the highest percentage of international sales, with 22.5% of all Jeeps sold outside of North America, while Ram’s percentage was the lowest at 2.2%. Chrysler’s international percentage was slightly higher, 2.7%, while Dodge got 8.3% of its sales outside of NAFTA.

The numbers in the following chart are different from company totals because they exclude rebadged Hyundai vehicles sold as Dodges in Mexico, as well as heavy-duty trucks in Canada and Mexico. The totals for Chrysler de Mexico include sales of the Fiat Strada, sold as the Ram 700, and the Fiat Ducato, now sold as the Ram ProMaster.

Thanks to Ralph Kisiel (FCA US), LouAnn Gosselin (Chrysler Canada), and Miguel Ceballos (Chrysler de Mexico) for providing detailed data.

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for just-auto.com, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
