Chrysler December and 2014 US sales shoot up

by Bill Cawthon on

Chrysler brands sold 193,261 vehicles in December, 20% over December 2013 — the 57th consecutive month of sales growth and the best December since 2004.

Full-year sales totaled 2,090,639 cars and trucks, up 16.1% from 2013, making 2014 the company’s best year since 2006 and the first year of two million sales since 2007 (as predicted by Allpar).  Reid Bigland, Head of U.S. Sales, boasted, “… once again, we were the fastest-growing automaker in the country.”

December growth was led by the Chrysler brand with sales up 52.6%, driven by a 187% explosion in sales of the Chrysler 200 and by increased minivan sales.  Ram  was next, propelled by strong sales of the Ram pickup and Ram ProMaster commercial van.

Jeep was relatively quiet, with the smallest monthly increase of 2014. Jeep needs just 16,432 sales from the rest of the world to hit that million sales mark for the year.

Eleven models set December sales records: Ram pickup, Ram ProMaster, Ram Cargo Van, Jeep Patriot (best month ever), Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler, Chrysler 200, Dodge Dart, Dodge Challenger, and Dodge Journey. The Fiat 500L also turned in its best sales month since it was launched in June 2013.

The four Chrysler brands, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, had their best sales year since the pre-Fiat days of 2007, and they were just 32,224 sales shy of beating that year. Chrysler brand sales have grown 119.5% since the 2009 slump. A prior reported suggested that a late change to depreciation laws would spur sales, which were already anticipated to be higher than usual.

“FCA US LLC,” née Chrysler Group, finished the month of December with a 72-day supply of inventory (537,731 units). Join the discussion.

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for just-auto.com, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
