Viper TA beats the C7 Corvette Z06 – again

by Patrick Rall on

The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has been billed by General Motors (and some writers) as the best thing since the wheel, but the second video showing “the most track capable Corvette ever” getting beaten by a Dodge Viper TA has surfaced online. It should be noted that in the most recent video, the Corvette runs a better quarter mile time and speed, but the big, bad Mopar supercar still takes the win.

The first published video that showed the current Dodge Viper TA racing against the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 included a series of high speed “roll races” and, in every case, the Viper soundly pummeled the new super-Vette. The GM camp was quick to make excuses about why the Viper made such short work of the new Z06, with the best excuse coming from the automaker itself. It turns out that GM actually programmed the engine computer of the Z06 to pull timing and power when the engine gets hot, so while the Corvette Z06 is expected to pump out 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, it was likely making far less than that in the high-speed race against the Viper.

In case you missed that first video, here it is:

As you can see, there is no question that the Viper TA has a sizable advantage over this Corvette Z06, even if that advantage does come from engine computer de-tuning the LT4 when it gets warm. However, this is a street race, and there are too many variables to take this video too seriously.

More recently, another video showing the Viper TA racing against the Corvette Z06 surfaced; this time, the two giants are going head to head on a quarter mile drag strip. These are not the same two cars, for the record, but the outcome is somewhat similar.

The Viper TA driver pulls a slightly better reaction time and because of that, the Mopar supercar hops out to an early lead. The Corvette puts down an impressive run – actually running a quicker time and speed – but the Viper still gets the win light on the big board. Due to the quicker elapsed time of the Corvette, we are sure to hear more excuses from the Corvette crowd, but in the war between the Vette and the Viper in the real world, the score is Viper 2, Z06 0.
