Apple’s “self driving” Dodge?

by David Zatz on

caravanWhile Google chose to outfit a Toyota for its self-driving car experiments, Apple has leased at least one Dodge Caravan for  use assumed by Claycord News & Talk to be self-driving experiments. MacRumors, on the other hand, suggested that the minivan is actually being used for “street view” mapping as Apple tries to boost the usefulness of its speedy but flawed mapping software.

On the side of the self-driving Dodge argument is the fact that some of the 12 cameras are pointing down. On the side of the mapping argument is the fact that Google has used vehicles with up to 15 cameras for the purpose, and there does not seem to be a serious payoff for Apple in self-driving car technology.

David Zatz founded Allpar in 1998 (based on a site he had begun in 1993-94), after years of writing reviews for retail trades. He has been quoted by the New York Times, the Daily Telegraph, the Detroit News, and USA Today. Before making Allpar a full-time career, he was a consultant in organizational psychology.
