Boosted by sales of the new Renegade, Jeep sales in Italy exploded in January, outpacing every other brand on the market.

Registrations of new Jeeps rose 388.3%, from 523 in January 2014 to 2,554 last month, giving Jeep a 1.94% share of the Italian new vehicle market.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group sales grew 11.3%, year-over-year as every brand but Lancia/Chrysler finished the month in the black. FCA’s growth beat the 10.9% improvement in the Italian passenger vehicle market.

Sales of Fiat-brand light vehicles rose 9.5% while Alfa Romeo chipped in a 2.6% gain. Fiat remained Italy’s favorite brand.

Ferrari deliveries were up 11.1% and Maserati sales inched up 1.6%.

Lancia/Chrysler sales fell 11.3% in January.

Fiat Chrysler’s market share improved from 28.31% last January to 28.42% last month, an increase entirely due to Jeep as Ferrari’s share remained flat and all other FCA brands lost share.

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for just-auto.com, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
