Cars up, trucks down in February

by Bill Cawthon on

Production of Chrysler brand passenger cars rose 25% in February as truck output fell 7%, due primarily to a 49% cut in build orders for minivans as the Windsor Assembly plant shut down for retooling.

Assembly of the Chrysler 200 easily overcame the loss of the first-generation 200 and the Dodge Avenger as the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant built 30% more cars last month than in February 2014.

Builds of the large cars (LX, LC, LD) rose 27%.

The Belvidere Assembly Plant cranked out 11% more Dodge Darts than it did in February 2014.

Fiat 500 production more than doubled, up 101% last month.

The SRT Viper was the only car with a deficit, down 4% in February.

Ram pickup output fell 2% in February, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) shortfall to 8%. Heavy-duty truck builds were up 4%.

Jeep production rose modestly though 107 fewer Cherokees came off the Toledo North line last month.

Total Chrysler brands production fell about 2% though the YTD totals are still slightly ahead of this time last year.

Total FCA North American production fell about 1% for the month but is also slightly ahead of the January-February 2014 period.

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for just-auto.com, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
