Viper TA vs C7 Corvette Z06

by Patrick Rall on

In the supercar world, there aren’t many names that are more respected than the Dodge Viper and the Chevrolet Corvette. While  the current Viper Time Attack and the C7 Corvette Z06 have not beaten the most significant record lap times around the world, they remain the top performance packages for modern American supercars.

Today, we bring you some footage of the two American track monsters in action as they go head to head at Road Atlanta.

There are some disclaimers before getting into these videos showing the Viper TA lapping Road America with the C7 Corvette Z06. First, the Viper TA is a 2014 model with the previous aerodynamic package, so the 2015 Viper TA would likely be a little better than the 2014 model shown here. The Corvette Z06 was introduced for the 2015 model year.

Next, and most importantly, the Viper TA is wearing a set of “Pirelli slicks” while the Corvette Z06 rides on the stock Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup 2 tires of the Z07 package. The Super Sport Cup 2 are arguably the most track capable road tires on the market, but the GM camp will surely complain of an unfair advantage with the Viper rolling on the Pirellis.

Finally, these cars both appear to be very well driven, but we don’t know who is driven them and if both cars were piloted by pro drivers, the results of a race between the 2014 Viper TA and the 2015 Corvette Z06 may have a different outcome.

The first video below is a side by side clip showing the Corvette Z06 lapping Road America from the Performance Data Recorder, while the Viper TA lap is captured from an in-car camera system. Both include speeds, lap times, G-forces, engine speeds, throttle input, and other information. I would imagine that the guy who made the video picked the quickest lap times for each of the two American supercars and stacked them for a head-to-head comparison. The speeds on straightaways and through turns is easy to compare in this format. Kudos to the person who made this first video.

The second video is much longer, showing several laps from a GoPro camera strapped to the outside of the 2014 Viper TA. There is no telemetry of any kind, but we get to watch the Viper Time Attack track down and pass the Corvette Z06 after the Chevy left the pits first. By the time the two supercars got to the starting line, the Corvette was within eye-shot of the Viper. As the two run down the long straights, it looks as though the Corvette has a slight advantage with the bigger power levels, but the Viper closes the gap in each corner. When they get into a tighter, more intricate section of the track, the Viper gets up onto the back of the Z06, but when the Corvette pulls away a bit coming out of those corners.

However, as the C7 Corvette Z06 and the 2014 Viper TA finish their first full lap, the Dodge gets a strong run on the Corvette and manages to make a move on the outside of turn 1 to get around the supercharged Chevy. From there on out, we don’t see the Corvette again, but we do get to watch the Viper overtake a BMW, a C6 Corvette, and a Porsche. Nothing passes the Viper.
