2015 Dodge Viper SRT: $480k in China

by Patrick Rall on

The 2015 Dodge Viper isn’t sold in China, but the gorgeous American supercar is highly sought after; and thanks to the grey market importer Beijing Tuning Street, wealthy Chinese gearheads can buy a brand new Viper. However, as is generally the case with grey market, high end cars, buying a new Dodge Viper in China comes with a massive price tag – costing over $480,000 US dollars with the current exchange rate.

According to CarNewsChina, Beijing Tuning Street has a 2015 Dodge Viper SRT in Adrenaline Red with the Sidewinder II wheels. If this car was sitting in the showroom of your local American Dodge dealership, it would have an MSRP around $90,790. However, due to the massive taxes imposed on cars built outside of China and cars with an engine larger than 4.0L, along with a high markup, this Viper costs 2,997,700 Chinese Yuan, which with the conversion rate at this minute is $480,407 US dollars.

For the cost of this 2015 Dodge Viper SRT in China, the same amount of money could get an American buyer this same Viper, a Hellcat Challenger, a Hellcat Charger, a 2015 Viper TA, a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, a fully loaded Ram 3500 with the Cummins Turbo Diesel engine, and $17,000 worth of fuel.

That might sound a little crazy and make some American Dodge fans question if this grey market importer actually sells any cars. They  have already sold three new Dodge Vipers, though, and they likely all cost at least as much as the one in this most recent report considering that this Viper is a “base model.” In fact, the Viper has sold so well that Beijing Tuning Street has plans to import “many more” in the near future.

So, if you are a Chinese business and you have the equivalent of a half million US dollars laying around, you can drive the 645 horsepower Dodge Viper to and from your office every day. If you are an American shopper, this is one more reason to be happy to live in the USA – where the Dodge Viper only costs around $90k.
