Small and large Chryslers coming

Chrysler is set to extend its range downwards into compact cars, for the first time since the 1980s, according to the FCA investor plan — likely at around the same time as the brand is replacing its  largest vehicle, the Town & Country.

The new small car will almost certainly be called the Chrysler 100, following the current naming scheme.  The name of the minivan has not yet been released, but one executive noted that the name Town & Country could be kept as a trim line. Some have speculated that the name Caravan will continue, switched from Dodge to Chrysler, with the Town & Country series at the top of the line — continuing the current Caravan vs Town & Country delineation, but within a single brand.

Our sources have told us that, from the firewall to the front bumper, the platform and architecture will be similar to the current 200. The new minivan is reportedly to have all wheel drive as an option, though that option may require jettisoning Stow ‘n’ Go seats for removable ones.

Meanwhile, Allpar sources have claimed that the small car may follow the Renegade’s SUSW platform and architecture, though without the special allowances required for being a Jeep. It would likely be about as low to the ground as the base Renegade, if not lower, sold in FWD only, and carry a Chrysler four-cylinder except possibly on the entry-level stick-shift, which would have a 1.4 turbo to help fuel-economy numbers in advertising. The 2.0 turbo engine may be ready in time for launch.

So far, none have been spotted. Future minivans should start appearing after the Windsor assembly plant finishes its renovation and starts piloting the new vans. Chrysler is likely to be more careful with testing the minivans, especially given snafus with the 2014 Jeep Cherokee.
