Jeep’s best May. Ever.

by Bill Cawthon on

The Jeep brand set an all-time record in May with total sales of 79,652 vehicles. The record is quite appropriate: last month was also the best May in the 128-year history of automotive sales.

Deliveries of Jeep vehicles have now set sales records every month since November 2013.

Jeep chalked up another month as the best-selling SUV/crossover brand in the U.S. For the first five months of 2015, Jeep was 31,172 sales ahead of runner-up Ford and 78,344 ahead of third-place Chevy.

The Wrangler was the top Jeep for the month, setting its own all-time sales record with 22,324 deliveries. This is the first time the Wrangler has broken the 20,000-sale barrier. It outsold the Ford Explorer.

The Cherokee, which also had its best sales month ever, was just 86 sales behind the Explorer.

Out of 104 crossovers and SUVs reported in May, the Wrangler, Cherokee and Grand Cherokee were 6th, 8th and 9th. Jeep had more models in the top ten utilities than any other automaker.

The Renegade is coming on strong, though it looks like the growth is coming at the expense of the Compass. In May 2014 Compass had 8,666 sales; last month, the Compass and Renegade combined for a total of 8,668 sales.

Recently released by-model European sales figures show that Jeep was Fiat Chrysler’s second-best-selling brand in April. Jeep outsold Lancia and Alfa Romeo.

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
