How FCA Hit #1 in the Strategic Vision Study

by Bill Cawthon on

Fiat Chrysler is number one in total quality, according to auto industry consultancy Strategic Vision.

FCA US, the former Chrysler, edged out General Motors and Volkswagen for the honors in the 2015 Total Quality Index, based on surveys from more than 46,000 new vehicle owners.

The Total Quality Index goes beyond problem-counting to include other aspects measuring other aspects of consumers’ experiences with their new vehicle.

Strategic Vision president Alexander Edwards said that problems per vehicle have declined dramatically since 1997, and are no longer a valid measure on their own, because variation between brands is relatively small. Therefore, their survey includes customer perceptions of quality as well.

This is the first time that Fiat Chrysler has taken the top honors since the Strategic Vision inaugurated their annual study in 1995. It earned 859 of a possible 1,000 points compared to 858 for GM and Volkswagen.

“FCA has incrementally risen from one segment leader in 2010 to six segment leaders in 2015. Though at Strategic Vision we often preach about looking forward, it’s hard to not be in admiration of the turn-around achieved by FCA (Chrysler) company employees,” said Christopher Chaney, senior vice president of Strategic Vision.

In addition to the corporate award and six segment winners, Ram was named top non-luxury brand.

Segment Winner TQI Score

Mid-Size SUV Dodge Durango 876

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
