Rare 1984 Daytona and Charger up for bids

by Bill Cawthon on

A unique 1984 Dodge Daytona and a rare Charger are being auctioned on eBay.

One car is IMSA champion Kal Showket’s #99 Dodge Daytona Turbo Z. This is the car Showket raced in 1984 and 1985 (the photo shows the car in action at Laguna Seca in 1984); it was featured in the April 1989 issue of Motor Trend.

Showket had already challenged Joe Varde for the 1983 IMSA RS championship in a Dodge Charger. Though Varde won in another Charger, Showket racked up five wins.

The car has been stored in a climate controlled garage for most of its life after its racing career. It comes with two extra motors and the original three-piece Gotti wheels.

The 1984 Shelby Charger is red with gold decals and seat embroidery; a one-off pilot car, it comes with an under-hood plaque that says “Special Handling/Shelby Pilot/Special Color Combinations.”

This was the only 1984 Shelby Charger produced with the red-and-gold color scheme or maroon interior.

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
