New cargo bed coming?

by David Zatz on

The Chevy Avalanche began a trend of pickup trucks with built-in bed storage from the factory.  Ram countered with the arguably better-engineered, and certainly better-looking, RamBox system. Both approaches require a good deal of customization, but a new patent from FCA’s Michael Gillam and Joseph Dehner may help wiht that.

RamBox patent

Their patent filing from May 13, 2014, approved just this month, is for a modular setup where, during assembly, the bed frame can either get a side frame member with or without the storage modules. This would make assembly easier, reduce parts needed by the factory, and possibly reduce the cost so that Rambox would be cheaper and the assembly plant more flexible. See the patent • Thanks, Steven St. Laurent
