Eight-speed to be upgraded

by David Zatz on

The eight-speed automatic used in large Dodge and Chrysler cars, Ram trucks, Jeep Grand Cherokees, Dodge Durangos, and the future Jeep Wrangler is getting an upgrade.

The company did not say when it would happen, but there is a comment on “Conversion of 8-speed from Generation 1 to Generation 2” in the next four-year union contract.

The eight-speed is already a highly capable and efficient transmission, at the state of the art, but ZF and Chrysler have been building them for some time, and have likely gotten some feel for what goes wrong over time and what feature are production bottlenecks; and have increased their knowledge through production of the nine-speed automatics.

David Zatz founded Allpar in 1998 (based on a site he had begun in 1993-94), after years of writing reviews for retail trades.
