Fiat, VM diesels OK by UK

by David Zatz on

VW Volkswagen dieselAccording to the United Kingdom’s transport minister, Patrick McLoughlin, Volkswagen, whose diesels also used in Audi, SEAT, and other cars, remains the sole company to have explicitly cheated on emissions tests.

Volkswagen Group has been selling cars with diesel engines rigged to sense testing and illegally alter their behavior since 2008, according to the company itself. An executive blamed a small number of rogue engineers, though these engineers were flown in any country which had trouble getting engines certified.

While there are gaps between lab results and on-the-road testing, there has so far been no evidence that any other company has deliberately built in “cheat mechanisms.”

Fiat and its VM subsidiary both make diesel engines used by the former Chrysler, including the VM 3-liter diesel used in North American Ram 1500s and Jeep Grand Cherokees, and a Fiat four-cylinder used in the Ram ProMaster. VM has long made diesel engines for Jeeps and Chryslers sold in Europe.

While Volkswagen found over $30 million to pay off its former CEO, who still holds other positions at the company, it is now saying that it will try to extract over $3 billion from its suppliers. The company is one of the two largest sellers of autos in the world, and had nearly 40 billion in euros (around $45 billion) at the end of 2014.
