AutoNation to be biggest FCA dealer

by David Zatz on

Megadealer AutoNation is set to become the largest seller of Fiat Chrysler cars in the United States, according to an article in Bloomberg News — by buying smaller dealerships and chains.

This is likely good news for FCA and buyers, since AutoNation has a better reputation than many current dealerships. The chain is the largest seller of new cars in the United States already, and it is gambling heavily this year on FCA brands, based partly on the CEO’s look at the future-product pipeline.

The current “biggest seller” of FCA cars is Lithia Motors, another large chain of dealerships that spans many brands.

The final deal that will push AutoNation past Lithia will not close until early 2016, and will, along with another deal, push AutoNation from 240 to 265 dealerships. AutoNation remains geographically constricted, but may start buying luxury dealerships in new regions, according to the article.
