Six FCA cars are “Best Buys”

by Bill Cawthon on

The Jeep Renegade, one of six FCA cars named as a Consumer’s Digest Best Buy, was the only Best Buy in its class — a new one for the awards, subcompact SUV.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is back for the sixth year as a Best Buy in the Mid-Size SUV category, the Dodge Durango made its fifth consecutive appearance in Full-Size SUVs, and the Fiat 500 has now been honored five times. Finally, the Chrysler 300 was ranked as a Best Buy among Luxury Cars for the fourth time, and the Dodge Challenger appears as one of the top Sporty Cars for its second time.

Missing from this year’s list are the Chrysler 200, rated a Best Buy among family cars last year, and the Ram 1500. Both the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan failed to make the cut.

Consumers Digest selects “Best Buys” based on the most value for the money within their segment. Value is determined by price and ownership costs, as well as comfort, performance, and utility.

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
