Mystery Maserati (?) spotted in LA

by David Zatz on

A camouflaged car with Michigan manufacturers’ plates and a Maserati chase car were spotted by Jason Jones in the Los Angeles area. It seems likely that this is a forthcoming Maserati coupe, and it appears to be similar to the loosely-Chrysler-300C-based Maserati Ghibli.

The Ghibli reportedly started with the 300C, but it has a different skin and interior, diesel option, heavily reworked gasoline engine, retuned suspension, a different front suspension, and many weight-saving features. Any future Maserati would likely be further differentiated from the Chrysler line to avoid abuse from auto critics.

The car is clearly a coupe, and could conceivably be either a Dodge or Alfa Romeo on the upcoming “Giorgio” platform/architecture as well.

The only known upcoming Maserati coupes are the Gran Turismo, which is currently not selling well and is due for replacement, and the GranSport or Alfieri, which is to be a smaller vehicle on the 4C frame. If one assumes, though, that the center piece of camouflage is meant to hide a Maserati emblem, the car’s outer resemblance to a Ghibli is understandable.

Update: the car in the spy shots has been reported to be a Lexus by other sources.
