Powering up Hemis and Wranglers

by Patrick Rall on

SCT Performance is now selling tuning devices with pre-loaded engine tunes for six popular 2015 Mopars: the Charger and Challenger (Hellcat or 5.7 Hemi), the Ram 1500 Hemi, and the Jeep Wrangler V6.

Big Power Gains for the Hellcat
With SCT’s X4 Performance Programmer, Hellcat owners can relatively easily dial up an extra 19 horsepower and 28 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels. Assuming a 15% drivetrain loss, it increases total output to 730 horsepower and 683 lb-ft of torque.

Smaller gains for other Hemis
The 5.7 V8 package adds 13 horsepower and 16 lb-ft of torque at the wheels of either Dodge. The Challenger R/T should end up at around 390 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque, while the Charger R/T should peak at around 385 hp and 414 l-ft of torque. It also adds 14 horsepower and 11 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels of the Ram, boosting the engine to around 412 horsepower and 423 lb-ft of torque. An existing 6.4 liter package is still available, too.

Jeep Pentastar Power
Finally, SCT offers a tune for the 2015 Jeep Wrangler with the 3.6L Pentastar V6, but it only adds 3 rear wheel horsepower and 9 lb-ft of torque, so the power gains are minimal.

Allpar has not used an SCT programmer, but “hand tuners” tend to increase fuel efficiency and drivability, e.g. by lowering the torque curve, so for someone looking to adjust for huge offroad tires (as an example), the SCT preloaded tune for the Jeep may be a nice bonus. Again, using a tuner may reduce the engine’s lifespan from the goal of 200,000 miles, or may have an impact on emissions which could be illegal in some states.

SCT noted that the tuner is not for use on “emissions controlled vehicles” (anything driven on public road) in California, and requires an unlocked engine controller; they sell and exchange the latter.
