Ram 1500 economy vs the world

by David Zatz on

Earlier this year, the Canadian Truck King Challenge rated the Ram 1500 as the best truck in Canada, for the second year, despite a new GMC Canyon diesel and aluminum Ford F-150.

The Ram 1500 diesel was impressive in fuel economy, beating the smaller Ford EcoBoost V6 by 27% unloaded and by 29% when towing 6,000 pounds. The Ram also beat the Ford 3.5 EcoBoost — by 20% unloaded, and by 23% when towing.  The F-150, while carrying nowhere near the economy of the Ram, does have a higher payload rating.

The Ford was, in fairness, hardly the most economical pickup tested. The best of the rest was the GMC Canyon Diesel, also sold as the Chevrolet Colorado. This truck has a four cylinder engine, compared with the Ram’s V6, but still only hit 9.54 liters/100 km unloaded, and 9.84 loaded with 1,000 pounds — using an extra liter of fuel or so every 62 miles, versus the Ram’s 8.85 empty and 8.61 loaded.

Oddly, the Canyon even used more fuel than the Ram when the Canyon was towing 4,000 pounds and the Ram, 6,000 pounds (13.76 l/100km vs Ram’s 11.88 l/100km). The most likely reason is the GMC’s six speed automatic, which has a narrow range than the Ram’s eight speed. Chevrolet does have an eight speed now on its  Silverado series.

The Canadian Truck King Challenge’s results were in line with testing by the Canadian government.
