Next Compass spied Updated

by David Zatz on

IndianAutosBlog caught a new spy shot of the Jeep Compass replacement, quite possibly to be called the Jeep Compass. The compact car is still popular in much of the world, and retaining the name may help the launch of its successor — which is reportedly to keep its “mini Grand Cherokee” looks.

The “possible future Compass,” officially at this point still project 551, appears to have wrap-around tail lamps, a roof spoiler, and a clamshell hood, with a high ground clearance (at least on some versions).  It is expected to be unveiled at March 2016’s New York Auto Show, and to have a choice of a six speed manual and nine speed automatic, coupled with a Chrysler four cylinder gasoline engine and, outside North America, a 2-liter Fiat diesel.  It is based on the same platform as the Renegade, just as the current Compass and Patriot share a platform.

2017 Jeep Compass spy shot

IAB reader Macrey Romero caught the spy shot above; the popular car journal wrote that it will be made locally in India, at the Fiat-Tata joint venture  plant in Ranjangaon.  It may be exported from India to right-hand-drive markets worldwide. Past reports suggested it would be made in Brazil and possibly Mexico as well. Original story.

Update: Prabhjot wrote that photo, while run on an Indian site, was not taken in India. He noted that Jeep will be re-launched in India in February, with large numbers of Jeep Grand Cherokees (diesels and SRTs) and Wranglers to be displayed and sold shortly after, starting around March/April; they have also imported diesel Renegades, likely for testing and to prepare suppliers and production facilities.  No Compass prototype has been imported to India yet. Import/export trade data for India are available at zauba.com.
