FCA #3 producer in North America

by David Zatz on

FCA was the #3 builder of cars in North America for 2015 — and it was not far behind Ford, the #2.

GM maintained a comfortable lead, though it was nowhere near its past heights, building 3.4 million cars and trucks in North America during both 2014 and 2015 (the two years were around 10,000 vehicles apart). #2 Ford came in with 3.1 million, a boost of around 140,000 from 2014.  Finally, FCA was responsible for almost exactly 2.9 million units, around 90,000 more than in 2014.

Ford made the highest proportion of North American vehicles built in the US — 80%, with 14% in Mexico and just 6% in Canada. FCA came in #2 for the percentage of US production, at 64%, with 19% made in Mexico and 18% in Canada. Finally, GM had 62% of its production in the US, 28% in Mexico, and 10% in Canada.

All three make vehicles around the world and have engineering centers in Europe and Asia as well as North America; though all three do more engineering in the US than Asian or European firms, even those with North American engineering centers.

FCA relied the most on “truck” production in North America, thanks to an upsurge of Jeeps and an outdated way of defining “trucks” (which includes minivans, Journeys, and all Jeeps). The company’s truck:car ratio was 4:1, versus Ford’s roughly 7:3 and GM’s 3:2.
