Jeep Cherokee: Just $48,350

by David Zatz on

This natty Jeep display, showing off a KL Cherokee, sits in Shanghai’s main high speed railway station (Hongqiao). It has the four-cylinder engine, Jeep Active Drive with Selec-Terrain, and a price tag of 315,800 RMB, which works out to $48,350.

The Cherokee in question, photographed by Todd Turner, does seem well-equipped, including UConnect 8.4, LaneSense, rear camera and sensors, and the CommandView™ dual sunroofs.

Imported cars are taxed quite heavily (25%), which is the major reason automakers seeking serious sales in China enter joint ventures with local businesses. Foreign companies are not allowed to own majority shares in Chinese facilities, making joint ventures, which transfer knowledge and wealth to local people, the only option.

GM and Volvo are both importing China-made cars to the US; these are taxed at 5%.
