Jesse James Jeep is NRA’s top prize

by Bill Cawthon on

A Jeep Wrangler Unlimited customized by Jesse James, a hot rod builder best known as the founder of West Coast Choppers and the star of Discovery Channel’s “Outlaw Garage,” is the top prize in this year’s National Rifle Association Truck Raffle Sweepstakes.

The Wrangler makeover includes a custom-made Kevlar pickup bed, custom fenders, custom cargo rack, light bar and offroad billet mil-spec wheels.  The large “JJFU” on the side of the bed stands for “Jesse James Firearms Unlimited,” the name of James’ gun company. The grand prize includes two rifles built by Jesse James: a Nomad 10 in .308 Winchester and a Nomad 15 in .223 Remington, with a combined value of around $9,000, and $20,000 in cash.

The NRA estimates the package’s total value to be about $83,000, putting the value of the custom Jeep at about $54,000. The NRA noted that FCA US LLC was not “associated with this raffle in any way.”

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
