Dodge gets named Automotive Ad of the Year

by Bill Cawthon on

The Dodge “Wisdom” spot, originally created for the brand’s centennial in 2014, has been named Nielsen’s Automotive Ad of the Year.

Produced by the Richards Group, the video showed centenarians sharing words of wisdom such “There are miracles all around you” and “And never, ever, forget where you came from.”

First shown at the New York Auto Show in 2014, it became an instant viral hit, receiving more than 5.7 million views in less than 24 hours. It smashed records previously held by other Chrysler commercials like “Born of Fire.”

Chrysler trimmed 20 seconds from the original online spot and ran it during the Super Bowl in 2015, making it eligible for the Nielsen award.

The Nielsen Awards are based on about five million viewers who have watched TV in the past 24 hours.  [Dorothy Titleman, shown in photo above, turned 101 last September and, as of a few days ago, was still going strong.]

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for just-auto.com, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
