Watch the first Supercharged Challenger Drag Pak competition run

by Patrick Rall on

The newest Dodge Challenger Drag Pak was introduced last summer at the Chrysler Proving Grounds in Chelsea, Michigan, but the first official competition run for the new supercharged super stock car came earlier this month at the 2016 Gatornationals. This Challenger is owned and driven by Jonathan Allegrucci and built by Ray Barton Racing Engines for the Factory XX class.

If you listen carefully, you can hear the track announcer talking about the build of this new Challenger Drag Pak and how the 354 cubic inch Hemi made almost 1,200 horsepower during the build process, but that was before the final tuning efforts; the official power output was never published.

The Challenger, as it sits in the video, has at least 1,200 horsepower, and the team picked the Gatornationals as the place to make the first official NHRA run with this monster Mopar.

The video of the first official competition run for the new Drag Pak Challenger begins with a short burnout by both the blown Dodge and a fourth-generation Pontiac Firebird. When the green light drops, we can see that the Firebird red lit, but it really didn’t matter, as Allegrucci laid down an awesome 8.63 at 158.93 miles per hour to the Firebird’s high 12-second run.

Allegrucci later ran an 8.568 at 159.14mph, which put him fifth in the six-car Factory XX field, while the quickest car in the class ran an 8.44 at 160.18mph. For a first competitive effort, running within a tenth and a half of the class winner is a good start to the lengthy NHRA season.

Crank up your speakers and enjoy this first official competition run of the new Mopar Drag Pak Dodge Challenger race car with the 354 cubic inch supercharged engine.
