Levante (and Ram) to use Pacifica’s PHEV setup?

by David Zatz on

In early February, Allpar reported that the Chrysler Pacifica’s plug-in hybrid systems was not only designed to be easy to move to other cars, but was, adapted to the eight-speed transmission case, going to be used on most the Maserati lineup.

Other sources have also written that the Maserati Levante would be sold as a hybrid — indeed, every Maserati but the Alfieri is scheduled to get a hybrid variant by 2020, according to a report from Autocar sent to us by Karl.

FCA is working on hybrids that fit into modified versions of the nine-speed and eight-speed transmission cases; rumor has a milder, cheaper variation being tested now. There’s been no word on whether the Ram 1500 and Jeep Wrangler will get the mild or full-on PHEV versions (or both), but they are slated to have “alternative” powertrains in the next few years, according to an official slide.

Future cars and trucks that have hybrid motors available will also get efficient 48-volt electrical systems, even on the plain gasoline systems, according to the company. Many have tried to push 48 volt systems into the mainstream over the last decades, partly to avoid wasting electrical power — low-voltage DC current does not travel well.
