by David Zatz on

FCA issued a brief announcement, saying that Scott Gaberding, a long-time Chrysler leader, is now the global head of quality for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles as a whole and for FCA North America in particular.

Mr. Gaberding had been chief purchasing officer, a position now taken by Scott Thiele, who also took responsibility for North American purchasing.

(Update starts:)

Automotive News reported that former North American purchasing chief Tom Finelli, in the post for two years, is becoming head of purchasing for FCA manufacturing-equipment subsidiary Comau. Scott Gaberding is replacing Mark Chernoby as the global head of quality and Matt Liddane as the North American head of quality. Mr. Liddane will take over quality at FCA’s Magneti Marelli subsidiary. Mr. Chernoby will stay on the group executive council.

The industry news source pointed out that FCA brands have done exceptionally poorly in quality ratings and was in seventh place in ratings of supplier relations.

Mr. Gaberding joined Chrysler Corporation in 1996, as the manager of the Chrysler Operating System group. He became the manufacturing engineering manage of Trenton Engine the following year, and rose quickly and  steadily through the ranks. He had been in charge of supplier quality in 2007, and head of manufacturing in 2009; he moved to purchasing three years ago.

Mr. Thiele joined Chrysler in 2007, as director of raw materials and stamping procurement; he had been rising through Whirpool from 1997, ending up in charge of global raw materials acquisition. In 2014, he was named vice president of global product finance.

Both are members of the Group Executive Council, the highest management group in FCA.
