Jeep ending use of suspect airbags

by David Zatz on

The Jeep Wrangler is the sole FCA vehicle that still uses Takata airbags which use non-dessicated ammonium nitrate. Other cars that still use it include the Toyota 4Runner, Lexus GX460,  Mitsubishis, and Volkswagens.

The airbag will go out of production for US-bound Wranglers by next week, and in all Wranglers by mid-September. Every airbag of that design sold in the US must be recalled by 2019, and FCA has asked dealers to inform customers of that fact.

When ammonium nitrate is exposed to moisture in the air it begins to degrade, and after several years the inflator can explode when the airbag is deployed in a crash. Ten deaths and one hundred injuries in the US have been linked to the airbags, with one suspected case in an FCA car. FCA has not used the most dangerous version of these airbags, a staple of some other companies.

FCA wrote that they had done over six thousand tests of older versions of the Wrangler passenger side inflator, with no problems. There are no known “events” related to the Wrangler passenger side airbags.

The recalls are proceeding over the course of years due to the difficulty of making replacements for millions of cars made by numerous automakers.
