Ramcharger or Rescue returning?

by David Zatz on

The people at Left Lane News wrote that there may well be a new Mopar SUV based on the Ram, presumably once the Warren Truck plant has been refurbished.

Jeep Rescue concept

The basis for the claims is a Mike Manley interview in USA Today — Mike Manley being the former Jeep chief who is now in charge of Ram. He said, “You have the opportunity with a new frame for the next-generation Ram … to take a large SUV off of it,” continuing that while today’s frame was quite good, it would be updated in the next generation (due around 2018).

The competition for large truck-based is tough, due to the quality, capability, and sheer market dominance of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburan, and their GMC brethren.

Left Lane News’ Ronan Glon wrote that it would likely be a Dodge, Chrysler, or Jeep, not a Ram.  There is precedent for the idea of a tough off-road Jeep based on a Ram frame — the impressive Jeep Rescue concept. At the time, a Jeep rep noted that the width of the Ram was a disadvantage on many trails, compared with the narrow Wrangler. Thanks, Adventurer55.
