Where are the Wagoneers coming from?

by David Zatz on

Larry Vellequette of Automotive News was able to confirm long-standing rumors that the future Jeep Grand Wagoneer would be based on the (future) Grand Cherokee.  The Wagoneer, whose existence has only recently been the stuff of rumor, was also confirmed to likely be based on the Grand Cherokee.

Jeep chief Mike Manley told Mr. Vellequette that both Wagoneers would be “closer to trim levels” than completely different cars, as was the case for the XJ-based Wagoneer, which was dropped in 1991.

Mr. Manley said that the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer could be likened to the Overland and Summit.  The vehicles will be built at Warren Truck once the Ram 1500 moves to Sterling Heights around 2017.
