Return of the Caravan?

by David Zatz on

Will the Caravan make a return after all?

That’s a question asked by many Canadians, given the incredible sales of the Dodge and the less amazing sales of the Chrysler. In the US, the Chrysler and Dodge minivans have had similar sales; in Canada, the Dodge takes nearly all FCA minivan sales and dominates Toyota and Honda.

Dodge Caravan

DarkSky created a template for a Canadian Dodge Caravan, modified as little as possible from the Chrysler. That said, it seems more likely that Chrysler will either create a sub-brand (“Chrysler Pacifica Caravan” or “Chrysler Caravan.”) Chrysler Canada rebranded the Dodge Neon as the Chrysler Neon and later returned it as the Dodge SX 2.0, so they’re used to that kind of thing.

Another option is simply making a Pacifica Canadian Value Package that slashes the base price of the minivan for bargain-conscious buyers — in Canada. In the USA, the Pacifica has been selling well, and is unlikely to see a Dodge companion after the next model year is over; and a bargain-basement American Value Package is possible, but we suspect the company would like to avoid becoming known as sellers of “the van you get if you can’t afford a Honda.”

At one time, there was a plan for a crossover based on the Pacifica; this would maximize use of the Windsor minivan plant without the need to slash prices in pursuit of low-margin sales. By the time the Dodge sees its final days, that crossover should be here to take up the slack.
