FCA sales fell in October

by David Zatz on

FCA US reported that U.S. sales had fallen by 10%, to 176,609, in October, despite a hike in the Ram’s popularity. This puts October 2016 sales between the 2014 and 2015 totals.

GM’s US sales fell by just 1.7% in October, to 258,626; the massive automaker saw Buick rise by over 7%, but Chevrolet (-1%), GMC (-6%), and Cadillac (-9%) all fell.

Fleet sales were 23% of the total (40,801 vs 135,808 sold at retail), the same percentage they held in 2015 as a whole.

Ram shot up by 12% versus last October, with pickups going up by 7% and Ram ProMaster vans rising by 92%. Ram wasn’t able to beat the Silverado for a second month, but it did trim the gap between the two by 45%, to just 5,877, way down from the 10,605-unit gap last year.

Over at Jeep, there were just two hikes, with Grand Cherokee rising by 9% and the Patriot scoring a minor gain; Jeep remains 10% higher, year to date, than it was in 2015. While Jeep remains the top-selling utility brand*, total FCA utility sales came in second to General Motors by 17,993 in October. That’s in spite of the Dodge Journey’s gain of 17%.

Year to date, FCA US remains up by 2% from 2015 but seems unlikely to post a gain for the full year.

The biggest falls were in discontinued cars (Town &* Country, down 96%; 200, down 69%, though it’s still in production; and Dart, down 63%).  Of the cars still in production, the biggest percentage drops fell to the Chrysler 300 (down 29%), Chrysler 200, Dodge Charger (down 24%), and Dodge Challenger (down 22%). Minivans took a hit overall, with Pacifica coming around 4,500 short of October 2015’s Town & Country sales and Caravan dropping by 15% (around 2,000).

As for Fiat, there was no good cheer in Mudville, as the 4C dropped by 60% (to 23 sales), the 500 gained under a hundred units, 500L fell from 290 to 119, and 500X fell from 1,994 to 783. The 124 Spider was on sale again, but just 444 buyers came to get one. No actively produced Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, or Ram had such poor returns as the Fiats — except for the imported-from-Fiat ProMaster City, whose 1,052 sales were slightly below the 500 (the City’s investment doesn’t require blockbuster sales).

Year to date, the news is better for the domestic brands, but Sergio Marchionne warned of sales drops — and they’re here. On the brighter side, sales are still higher than accounted for in the original plans — so the company is still working towards debt freedom in 2018.
