US sales down; 2016 by car

by David Zatz on

How did FCA US do this year? The news is mixed: full year sales were down by just 8,562 cars; but December sales were down by 10%, roughly matching 2014 numbers. It was a humbling month as General Motors’ sales shot up by 10% and Ford rose by 0.3%.

Fleets were responsible for 19% of sales for the month, down 34% from December 2015; the good news is that retail sales were only down by 2%.

For most of 2016, sales were beating 2015 numbers; that ended with a sudden shortfall in October which continued through to December. CEO Sergio Marchionne had warned that sales would fall below 2015 numbers, while still staying above his original estimates, months earlier.

The company felt the absence of the Dart and 200 in the final months of the year, losing 7,000 sales from the 200 and 4,600 sales from the Dart in December alone. Chrysler fell by 27%, Dodge by 4% (thanks to higher Caravan and Durango sales). Jeep rose by 6% and Ram by 11% as SUV and truck sale surged through the industry. Fiat continued its plunge as gasoline prices stayed low.
