Does the slow Demon rollout make sense?

Over the past seven weeks, Dodge has been slowly unveiling bits and pieces of information on the 2018 Challenger SRT Demon. With seven more weeks until the New York Auto Show debut, we are only halfway through the show.

Most people have enjoyed the weekly piece-by-piece teaser act, but some have voiced their displeasure with the decision to introduce the new muscle car over such a long period of time.

I can understand the views of those folks who are too impatient to appreciate the “wait for next week” Challenger Demon rollout, but once FCA picked New York and April for the debut, it opened two paths.

Traditionally, we would have gotten some teasers  a week before the  show unveiling, after speculating from January to April (amidst various spy shots and real leaks).  We saw spy shots and the Fast 8 trailer with the wide bodied-Challenger late last year, so we had already been talking up the Demon for months when the name was first released. Speculation had it as the ADR, or American Drag Racer, and just as many people believed that it would be an all-wheel drive road racer.

Had Dodge waited for late March, we would have endured months of speculation and rumors. Instead, the company has offered up a new video and fact-sheet every Thursday at 8am. There is still some speculation, but each week, our picture gets more clear.

So, while the wait might be painful for some people, we would all have been waiting in either case, but in this case, we get bits of information to tide us over until the April debut.

What’s more, if a car like this had been held for the show without any vamping ahead of time, some crucial details would probably have gotten lost in the shuffle. With this slow rollout, we have a chance to examine each unique aspect of the 2018 Challenger Demon, from the trick suspension to weight reduction and from the custom-made Nitto drag radial tires to the Demon crate filled with tools and skinny front wheels for the track.

For those who are enjoying the gradual rollout, the best is yet to come; and for those who aren’t enjoying it, keep in mind what the alternative would be.
