VW, because GM wasn’t enough

by David Zatz on

Sergio Marchionne has once again made industry headlines, first by saying that a tie-up with GM was still possible, and, again, for saying that Volkswagen might be knocking on FCA’s door.

Automotive News Europe quoted Mr. Marchionne as saying that “VW may show up and have a chat,” because PSA and Opel together could challenge Volkswagen’s dominance in Europe. The FCA CEO continued on his past theme of the inevitability of auto industry consolidation.

The former Fiat brings little to the table that Volkswagen does not already have, other than Italian and Brazilian sales, but the former Chrysler would flesh out Volkswagen’s SUV and pickup lines and  provide North American access. Maserati is a valuable and unique brand, while Alfa Romeo may or may not become one.
