VW+FCA after all?

by David Zatz on

According to Reuters, Volkswagen CEO Matthias Mueller, responding to a media question, did not rule out a merger with Fiat Chrysler.

His statement was mixed with a jab at Sergio Marchionne, but was still more open than last week’s comment that Volkswagen had enough on its plate and could not think of merging. Reuters quoted him as saying, “I never said that a liaison with any other partner is ruled out once and for all. I only said that there is no contact at the moment between myself and Mr Marchionne…. It would be very helpful if Mr. Marchionne were to communicate his considerations to me too and not just to you [reporters].”

Volkswagen, having trouble with diesels and pressured by a deal with the United States, is shifting resources to electric cars, an area where FCA may have more experience. The company includes many brands, including Audi.
