FCA sales down a bit

by David Zatz on

Despite gains at Dodge and Ram (and higher incentives), FCA US sales dropped by 5%, from 199,467 in March 2016 to 190,254 in March 2017. That puts sales a little below 2016 and 2015, but well above 2010-2013.

The good news is that retail sales were down by just 1%, and accounted for 77% of March sales. Fleet sales fell by 15%, likely disproportionately affected by loss of rental units.

GM (2%) and Nissan (3%) sales rose slightly; Ford (-7%) and Toyota (-2%) sales dropped.

Dodge was up by 10%, and Ram by 6%; Maserati saw a 32% sales gain (to 1,312) for the month, with sales up by 46% for the year.

Chrysler minivan sales dropped quite a bit, from 14,230 to 9,435; but Caravan sales rose from 13,124 to 15,602, partly compensating. 300 and Charger sales were both down, but Challenger was up (not enough for a net increase).

Over at Jeep, the main shortfall was in the discontinued vehicles — Compass, down 66%, and Patriot, down 36%. Wrangler, Cherokee, and Renegade also fell, though, leaving only Grand Cherokee as a bright spot (up 22%).  The best selling Jeeps were, in order, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, and Cherokee.

The ProMaster City dropped by 30%, albeit in a business driven by fleet orders; but the full size ProMaster rose by 24%, more than making up the shortfall.

The new Fiat 500 pricing / model strategy seems to be working; the 500 saw 1,671 sales, up by 12% (though still one of FCA US’ lowest performers). The 500L and 500X continued their free-fall with a mere 106 and 726 sales; the Spider fell right between them.
