FCA sales off again

by Bill Cawthon on

FCA US LLC sales for April were down 7% compared to April 2016; but FCA did outperform Ford, which reported a larger deficit.

About two-thirds of the April drop can be attributed to reductions in daily rental fleet sales. FCA fleet deliveries totaled 30,650 last month, 21% lower than last April.

The big winner for the month was Ram. The Ram pickup outsold the Chevy Silverado again, and ended the month just 6,101 sales shy of the Silverado’s year-to-date total.

The biggest loser was Jeep, down 17% as steep shortfalls in smaller models wiped out a 6% increase in sales of the Grand Cherokee and essentially flat sales of the Wrangler. While the sharp drops in the Compass and Patriot were to be expected as the models are phased out, Cherokee sales fell 17% and Renegade turnover tumbled 9%.

Even with the slump, Jeep managed to best Ford and Chevrolet to take the top SUV brand crown again.

Sales of the Pacifica hit 10,427 as it outsold every other minivan and kept the Chrysler brand deficit to 3% for the month. Some of those sales came at the expense of the Caravan.

Dodge also reported a 3% shortfall. Big jumps in Journey and Durango sales, with a 5% gain for the Challenger, almost overcame a 20% drop in Caravan deliveries and weak Charger turnover.

Fiat brand sales plunged 18% with all 500 models missing their marks from last year.

The new Alfa Romeo Giulia outsold the Fiat 124 Spider in April, more than compensating for a 27% drop in deliveries of the Alfa 4C. The volume seller for Alfa Romeo is expected to be the Stelvio crossover, which was shown in New York but wasn’t sold in the US during April.

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for just-auto.com, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
