Jeep Compass, Trackhawk tech talk

by David Zatz on

Recently, Allpar was able to ask Jeep reps a few minor tech questions about the Jeep Compass and Grand Cherokee Trackhawk (the 707-horsepower, all wheel drive SUV).

The air inlets on either side of the Trackhawk front fascia, which look as though they may be brake coolers, lead to the low temperature radiator (LTR) system. This cools air as it enters the supercharger itself.  There is a water pump just forward of the passenger side front tire, part of the cooling module.

Much was made of the Dodge Dart’s underbody cover and its ability to reduce drag, but we haven’t seen another model with that device. The Sport, Latitude, and Limited, instead, have a lower front air dam, which releases air drag from the underbody; the Trailhawk, with a higher approach angle and no air dam, uses its steel skid plates to both protect the underside and to reduce drag. These systems were developed in FCA’s wind tunnels.

The Compass has the long-term equivalent of ten million miles of customer driving, in testing in the US, Brazil, China, India, and Europe.

Finally, we asked why the Compass front sensor is off to the passenger side, when it is in the center of other Jeeps, Chryslers, and Dodges.  A spokesman wrote, “The radar sensor position is packaged off center to maximize cooling, aero efficiency and packaging space clearances to the cooling modules.”

Each vehicle has custom tuning and safety-system development. (The front radar sensor is used to support the optional lane departure warning, forward collision warning and braking, and, if it is added to the Compass later, adaptive cruise control.)
