Million-Ram recall

by David Zatz on

FCA is recalling over one-and-a-quarter million Ram pickups across the world, because a software error could prevent the side airbag and seat belt pretensioner from working during a rollover.

The software error could come up if the Ram was rolled by a major underbody impact. The recall involves simple reprogramming, and covers the 2013-16 Ram 1500 and 2500 pickups and the 2014-2016 Ram 3500 pickups. The recall is to start in late June.

FCA started investigating in December, after being sued over a 2014 Ram 1500 whose airbag failed to deploy in a rollover crash. One death and two injuries were reported from this incident.

The odds of this issue occurring for any particular customer between now and July are extremely slim. Concerned customers, though, can contact the company or NHTSA; the FCA recall ID is T25 and the NHTSA campaign number is 17V302000.

The recall does provide some insight into FCA sales. 1.02 million of the pickups were sold in the United States, 216,007 in Canada, 21,668 in Mexico, and 21,530 in the rest of the world.
