Ram outsold Silverado again

by Bill Cawthon on

In a three-peat, Ram pickups outsold the Chevrolet Silverado in May, coming in 1,048 deliveries ahead of the “bowtie” brand.

After the first five months of 2017, the Ram was just 5,155 units behind the Silverado in year-to-date sales.

FCA US sales, May 2017

For the month, FCA US sales totaled 193,040 cars and light trucks, down less than 1%. Year-to-date sales of 880,014 vehicles are off by about 7%.

Former-Chrysler (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram) deliveries were off by slightly more than 1% for the month, and about 7% for the first five months of 2017. This was mainly due to deliberate cuts to fleet sales, which were still 21% of May sales; retail sales were up by 1% over May 2016.

Jeep sales fell again, coming in 15% behind May 2016, but they were still strong enough to beat Ford and Chevy in total May crossover/SUV sales. Grand Cherokee and Wrangler deliveries were up; but the loss of around 10,000 Compass and Patriot sales hurt. The Cherokee and Patriot were also down. The new Compass is at dealerships now.

Minivan sales soared in May, rising 58% as the Pacifica posted its best sales month since its introduction, while Grand Caravan turnover rose 58% compared to a supply-constrained May 2016.

The Durango, Journey, and Challenger helped Dodge to finish the month 8% ahead of May 2016. Combined with Jeep, the double-digit group of the Dodge SUVs boosted FCA past Ford in total utility sales. Ram also did well in commercial van deliveries, with solid results from both the ProMaster and ProMaster City.

GM reported a similar 1% drop in sales, despite boosts at Buick and Cadillac; Ford reported a 2% increase, driven by truck sales. Nissan showed a 3% gain, but has been padding its numbers with aggressive rental-fleet sales.

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for just-auto.com, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
