Auto-brakes standard in ’22

According to Reuters, the U.S. government recently approved the use of a larger amount of radio frequencies for automotive and aviation radar, to help prevent crashes. Currently, automakers have a one-gigahertz range of radio wave frequencies; that will expand to five gigahertz.

The radar systems are used for blind-spot detection, pedestrian-detection, and collision-predicting systems, which can automatically hit the brakes.  They are also used for lane departure warnings.

The industry claims that “tens of thousands” of crashes per year are currently being prevented, a number that could rise to one million when “auto-braking” becomes standard in 2022.  That’s based on a voluntary agreement between the U.S. and twenty automakers.

Some smaller portions of the radio spectrum will be dropped from automotive use after 2022; both moves will bring the US and European Union to identical standards, saving money for automakers. The use of a wider band will help radar units to be more accurate in sensing objects and distance.  Aviation use will include preventing collisions while taxiing.
