Euro Jeep at the halfway mark

For the first six months of 2017, Jeep registrations in the European Union were down 2.3% from January-June 2016.

According to figures released this morning by the ACEA, the European automakers’ association, Jeep registrations dropped for the third consecutive month in June, falling 6% to 9,341. That is just 202 vehicles ahead of the resurgent Alfa Romeo, which got more than half of its volume from the Giulia and the new Stelvio.

Some perspective is in order. In any year prior to 2016, Jeep’s first-half total of 53,948 registrations would have had management popping champagne and dancing in the streets. 2017 is shaping up to be Jeep’s second-best year ever, and deliveries are more than 21% ahead of the first six months of 2015.

According to FCA’s EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) region, the Renegade continues to be the top seller, with 79% of the total  in June. Coming into the month, Wrangler sales were down very slightly, less than 2%, while the Grand Cherokee saw a drop of nearly 11%.

The Grand Cherokee is still second only to the Renegade in total volume, but competition from newer utilities, including the Stelvio, is taking a toll. The Grand Cherokee is less expensive than the premium brands, but its base price is nearly $46,000 in Italy, over $15,000 higher than a base Laredo 4X2 in the U.S.

Cherokee registrations are down nearly 16% for the first half. That’s the largest drop among the Jeep models.
