FCA Canada’s good first half

by David Zatz on

FCA Canada has closed the books on the second-best first half in their 93-year history (including Maxwell Canada’s first year of selling Chryslers). The division sold 151,574 vehicles in the first six months of 2017, the second time they’ve sold over 150,000 in the first half.

June sales were down 7%, with retail falling by 5% and fleet by 13%; 71% of their 26,926 sales were to retail buyers, an increase from April and May.

Ram set a June sales record with 11,935 sales, 30% over June 2016. The Challenger gained by 21% on favorable Demon publicity.

Jeep took a pounding in the first half, with sales falling by 25%, led by the Patriot in percentages (53%) and by the Cherokee in volume (down 33%). The best selling Jeep by far does remain the Cherokee, with 11,196 sold so far this year — well above the #2 Wrangler and #3 Grand Cherokee.

Chrysler saw just a 4% drop, as Canadians bought 16% more 300s and around 600 more Pacificas than they’d purchased Town & Countrys last year. (The 200 only saw a 32% drop.)

The Caravan remains the company’s #2 Canadian seller, with 26,394 sales drowning the Pacifica’s 3,350. At that, Caravan sales were down by 6%. Dodge gained with the Charger (55%) and Challenger (11%) but both are minor players compared with the Caravan and Journey (down 4%).

The Ram x500 series’ 57,923 sales in the first half make it hard to believe that the Caravan was once Canada’s best selling vehicle. Ram pickups and chassis cabs are up by 16%; the ProMaster Van is up by 67% (to 2,400); and the City is down by 34% (to 668).

Fiat actually had a better year, with increased 500 and 500X sales and the addition of the new Fiat 124, but all Fiats together only came to 1,859 sales for the first half — well under the 200’s number.
